Insight Out Counselling is a practice located in Berwick managed by Ruth Neilson. Ruth is a registered Counsellor and Psychotherapist who offers specialist individual counselling and couple/relationship counselling over a wide range of areas which include but are not limited to: depression and /or anxiety, grief, loss and bereavement and trauma counselling. Ruth’s overarching focus is holding a client’s hope until they feel mentally strong enough to carry the hope within themselves.
In her practice, Ruth endeavours to foster an empathetic, safe therapeutic relationship and provides her clients an opportunity to explore aspects of their life in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Ruth believes that by establishing mutual respect and trust between herself and her clients, issues that previously have seemed hopeless can be challenged and managed, resulting in a clearer path to happiness and wellbeing.

Ruth is a PACFA Registered Counsellor and Psychotherapist with a Master of Psychotherapy and Counselling, a Post-Graduate Diploma of Counselling, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Science.
After nursing for a number of years, Ruth recognised she wanted to formalise her counselling skills as she recognised that counselling and psychotherapy were the areas of nursing practise that she loved.
When she’s at home, Ruth loves watching black and white films and spending time with her two children, her two dogs, two rescue cats, and two goldfish.
Individuals look for emotional support for many different reasons. Sometimes help is needed in dealing with anxiety and/or depression, low self worth and lacking in self esteem, a loved one or friend, health issues, job changes, or challenges in relationships. Some individuals consciously choose to explore their own personal growth. Individual Counselling can be a great support in all of these circumstances.
Ruth uses a number of different evidence based approaches depending on what is the best fit for the client, for example; Person Centered Approach, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Grief Solution Focused Therapy, Meaning-Making, and Mindfulness.
Unfortunately at some point in everyone’s lives most people will experience grief and loss. A person’s reaction to such experiences are not limited to feelings of sadness or anger, but can also involve guilt, yearning, regret, and confusion. More often than not, people carry these experiences with them through day to day life which impacts their ability to enjoy life as much as they can.
Grief counselling assists individuals navigate and process their loss in a way that allows them to adjust to the new reality of living with this loss. Gone are the strict stages of Grief to be gone through. Emphasis is on wherever the client is at the time.
Relationship counselling allows couples to explore and overcome whatever issues may have arisen in a safe and respectful environment. This is done by developing strategies and tools to assist couples in managing conflict and coping with stressors, and above all, improving communication..

Ruth often employs a blend of joint and individual counselling sessions, depending on the clients therapeutic needs. This flexibility allows Ruth to effectively assess each individual’s communication styles, patterns of behaviour and relationship needs so that she may best assist couples develop strategies to managing conflicting or incompatible styles, patterns and needs.
Trauma occurs in response to a severely distress event or series of events, overwhelming a person’s ability to cope. Trauma is often misunderstood as a concept where one must experience or witness extreme events in order to suffer a trauma, other experiences such as bullying, public ridicule, and repeated distress in childhood is also considered as trauma.
One person’s reaction to a traumatic event may be completely different to another person’s reaction. Trauma counselling helps a person identify and come to terms with the feelings and emotions they are experiencing and understand your coping mechanisms in reaction to the traumatic event.Gone are the days of de-briefing immediately post-event.It has been shown to be too triggering for some people. The primary aim of trauma counselling is to equip you with the resources to move on from simply surviving, to thriving.
